As you know I am a huge fan of the Body Shop. Not only do they have a fantastic range of make-up and skin care, but they also have an amazing ethos. They believe in fair trade which is a fair price for a product. They also give back to the local communities that they trade with by building schools and supporting the local community.
Back in October I had the opportunity to speak to one of The Body Shop’s Fair Trade Suppliers Milan Dev Bhattarai. He has been working with The Body Shop since 1989. His company Get Paper Industries is based in Nepal and provides packaging and stationary. It was so inspirational to meet him as I always wanted to see what kind of work was done and whether it was just a marketing ploy or not. Not only does his business support the local community with jobs (both women and men work in the factory), but they also contribute some of their profits to charitable projects.
The funds have been utilised for Girls Education, AIDS Awareness, Environmental activities and income generating activities. There are 5 primary schools, which were built or renovated with their help. More than 125 girls are currently getting scholarships to attend these schools, as girls are still discriminated for education.
So this Christmas The Body Shop has collaborated with Oxfam to give us the opportunity to give a gift to our loved ones that will not only please them, but also help others.
