Beauty News: Katie Perry Hair and Makeup at the Grammy Awards

Katy Perry at the Grammy Awards 2013

I just received this press release, so I thought I would share it with you in my Beauty News section this week. Katie Perry was rocking the Rimmel London Look at the Grammy Awards.

Jake Bailey is Katy’s go to make-up artist and gave her a gorgeous and elegant make-up look. Known for her outlandish hair and make-up experiments, Katy went for a much more subdued demure look. Focusing on the eyes mainly, Jake began by using Rimmel ScandalEyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal Eyeliner in Black to define her lashline.

He then used Rimmel Glameyes Trio Eye Shadow in Orion to give them subtle definition and completed the eyes with some false eyelashes and a generous coat of Rimmel Scandaleyes Mascara in Black.

Jake then perfected Katy Perry’s skin by mixing Rimmel BB Cream in Light with Rimmel’s Match Perfection Foundation in Ivory.

The BB cream helps to sheer out the foundation and gives it a gorgeous glow perfect for the red carpet or any event. I like to do this for photoshoots when I am trying to give the appearance of dewy fresh skin, when the model has good skin themselves and I don’t need too much coverage. To warm up Katy’s face he then added the finishing touch of Rimmel Lasting Finish Blush in Pink Rose on the apple of her cheeks which gives a very subtle pinch of colour to her face.

Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick by Kate Moss in #003 was the lipstick used. This is a fantastic nude, which is perfect when you are trying to keep the focus on someones eyes. All Rimmel products are really easy to find all over Ireland from local chemists to Boots.

Her hair was blow dried straight, with an emphasis on volume. I love this GHD Root Lift spray when I am trying to create a fuller style. You can get it  at Terence Paul a site in the UK.

What do you think of this look?

Lots of love,

My Work: Photocall with Mary Byrne

By | Celebrity, Uncatagorized | No Comments

Mary Byrne

A few years ago I got the oportunity to work with the talented Mary Byrne of XFactor fame. We did a video and photocall for Rehab Bingo, this is one of the clippings that made the papers. It was quite an unusual shoot. They recorded her and a few of the players in a photography studio. Then they put their heads onto an animated video. I think the video is really funny looking. You can tell that the person who did it doesn’t know about make-up as her neck is way paler than her face!

Hope you enjoyed it,

Lots of love

A Celtic Awakening Music Video

A Celtic Awakening

Last year I worked on a production for Detroit Public Television called A Celtic Awakening. The production team flew over from the States and they employed local actors and crew, including me! I got to work with the fantastic singer Faith-Marion Robinson who came to Ireland to record the backing visuals to her live show. She sings alot of old Irish songs, so wanted to come here to show the beautiful scenery that our country has to offer. Everything was meant to be from years gone by so the hair and make-up was traditional and old worldly.

Here is a little taster of the video:

It was a fantastic job, which had me travelling all over Ireland, seeing the best that the country’s tourist sites have to offer. One of my favourite spots was the rope bridge near Bushmills, it was so pretty and somewhat scary crossing it! We stayed the night in the Bushmills Hotel, which was the most amazing place to stay, really warm and felt homely with open fires and comfy furnishings.

The Ropewalk Bridge

Traditional Irish Village of Craggaunowen.  This is a fantastic celtic village in Co.Clare that has been restored, which created the perfect setting for one of her songs.

I wish jobs like this came along more often, I love travelling and really enjoyed getting to see loads of Ireland, we live in such a scenic country which is the perfect backdrop for film and television. More productions need to be made in Ireland!

Where is your favourite place to visit in Ireland?

Lots of love,

Olympic Makeup 2012

By | Celebrity | No Comments

I know you probably thought I was going to do an Olympic Inspired tutorial or something. Sorry to disappoint 🙂

I got to work on the video above recently, it didn’t take much, just some male grooming and basic film/tv makeup. I do love my work as I get to meet such a variety of people in the job. Jason is a very inspiring person and very fast!! I wish him all the best in the Olympics

About Jason:
Visually impaired sprinter Jason Smyth achieved fame at the Beijing 2008 Paralympic Games when he won the 100m (10.62) and 200m (21.4 3) T13 races in world record times. He fully merits his nickname of “The Fastest Paralympian on Earth”.
The Derry man is based in Florida and trains with US sprint king Tyson Gay, a former world champion and owner of the second fastest 100m of all-time. Gay describes Jason as “one of the most technically gifted sprinters alive”.
Jason’s success in Beijing was no surprise as two years earlier he had won gold in the 100m (10.86) and 200m (21.83) at the 2006 IPC Athletics World Championships in the Netherlands. A back injury ruled him out of the 2011 IPC Athletics World Championships in New Zealand, but he, together with fellow Paralympian Oscar Pistorius, competed at 2011’s IAAF World Championships in Korea.
Jason achieved the Olympic “B” standard time for 100m (10.22 seconds) but fell just short of the “A” standard of 10.18 – this would have made him the first track athlete to compete at both Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Jason is now focused on retaining his Paralympic 100m and 200m titles. The International Paralympic Committee have marked him as one to watch at the Games – he’ll have high hopes of glory in London’s Olympic Stadium.

Superquinn French Wine and Food Sale Photoshoot

By | Behind the Scene, Celebrity, Our Work, Photoshoots, PR, Uncatagorized | No Comments

A little bit of a delayed posting on this shoot really seeing as it took place back in March. I was asked to do the make-up for a Superquinn shoot for the launch of their French Wine & Food Sale which is took place across all their stores from March 28th for three weeks.

To celebrate the launch, Superquinn flew the Michelin award-winning French chef Jean Christophe Novelli over, who had created French themed recipes for them which were all based on local Irish produce.

I was brought in to do his makeup and make sure that when things got a bit hot in the kitchen everyone looked cool!

It was a really quick and fun shoot, I always wondered how they got all those flames on tv…all you need is some oil, a gas cooker and a french man!

Fashion Shoot Makeup

I did a shoot the other day and it was an absolute fabulous day, so excuse the poor quality of the pictures, but my phone camera just couldn’t handle the sunshine! I will share the finished photos when they are released. Amber was the model and she is so gorgeous already, we wanted to keep the make-up really simple. As there was alot of skin on show I made sure to really hydrate the skin. I usually use Body Shop’s Strawberry Body Butter, but I recently picked up some in M&S when I was in there recently. I am a huge fan of their tights and salads, a weird combo I know! Well now I can add their body butters to that list too.

On Amber’s face I also really hydrated her skin, but this time with Clinique’s Moisture Surge for Normal/Combination Skin. I love how lightweight and readily absorbed this moisturiser is. Skin just drinks it up and it quenches any thirst meaning it is perfectly prepped for the foundation. She has such great skin with the most beautiful freckles. I lightly evened out her skin tone with MAC Face and Body which created a thin veil allowing her sunkissed skin to glow through.

M.A.C. Face & Body Foundation

For the eyes, I lightly buffed a light peach eyeshadow called Samoa Silk into the contour of the eye and slightly shimmery cream colour called Dazzlelight to soften the edges, both from MAC.

I then lined the eyes with Estee Lauder’s Double Wear stay in place eye pencil in Chocolate which was smudged out and softened. I used my much loved Eyelure 020 False Eyelashes and applied lashings of Lancôme’s Hypnôse Mascara, which is simply THE BEST mascara on the market.

I warmed up her cheeks and décolletage with the Terre Saharienne Collecter bronzer from YSL, the texture is soft and silky. It contains a polymer that works with the skin and helps maintain its moisture level. It also has this gorgeous snake skin print engraved which I nearly wanted to preserve!

To complete the look I used a little Hush Liptar from OCC Cosmetics dabbed on with my finger to keep it soft and subtle.

We had a great days shoot, we were absolutely blessed with the weather. It rained so hard all night that it actually kept me away all night. The day of the shoot wasn’t the best, but as soon as we got to the Farmleigh to shoot, the clouds parted and we were basked in sunshine! Happy days, no need for the wellies that I packed.

Egg on my Face – Meeting a Desperate Scousewife

Layla Flaherty Backstage at the Late Late Show

Well you might remember I wrote about Scouse Brows recently and my trip to Carter Beauty for my HD Brows. Well I was giving the Scouse Brow a hard time and pondering who in their right mind would wear their brows like that. A couple of days later I was surprised to be asked do one of the girls from Desperate Scousewives’ makeup for the Late Late Show. Typical! I shouldn’t have opened my mouth 🙂

Layla Flaherty was over for the Late Late to talk about internet bullying and her experiences. It turns out that Layla is actually Irish and from Galway originally. She moved to Liverpool to follow here best friend who had gone there for college studies.

Before heading over to RTE to do her makeup I was a bit nervous that she would want me to do the Scouse Brow, which would have gone against my very nature of being a makeup artist. However I should not have worried at all as it turns out that she is not a fan of the look either. Infact Marissa from Carter Beauty had also travelled to the studios to ensure there wasn’t a stray hair out of place!

It was lovely to meet Layla and I think she is absolutely gorgeous. You can see her appearance  on RTE Player.

Maverick Sabre – I Need Music Video

By | Behind the Scene, Celebrity, Music | No Comments

A few months ago I had the pleasure of working with an up and coming star called Maverick Sabre. He is a true gent, originally from London, he moved to New Ross in Wexford and spent his formative years there. He moved back to London to pursue his music career.

We filmed most of the video in Co. Wexford, we were so lucky because we did alot of filming outside and the weather was absolutely splitting the rocks!

It was a very quick 2-day shoot, so there was alot to fit in to that short space! We travelled from Rosslare, to Wexford Town, New Ross, Greystones and the Dublin Mountains.

As you might have seen on twitter I got to do a few Halloween makeups this year. Not as many as in previous years because I have been really busy working on The Savage Eye 3 (will post about that in the future).

I did Tara O’Farrell and Georgia Salpa’s makeup for the Creatures of the Night Photocall for Miller.

Halloween Makeup Creatures of the Night

It was a sultry scary look that compromised of a black smokey eye, blood red lips,  paired with freaky yellow contacts and vampire fangs.

We had hoped that it would hit one or two newspapers, but we lucked out as it made it into the Sun, Metro, Mirror and Star. We even got a front cover!

The Makeup Show Europe 2011 – Part 1

By | Behind the Scene, Celebrity, Film and Television | 3 Comments

I was delighted to attend The Make-up Show Europe which took place in Berlin. I had such a blast! It was really inspirational to meet my make-up heroes! I thought I would do a few posts about the event as there was so much to see and do!

I managed to attend two workshops, 7 talks, show my book to 5 people and buy ALOT of make-up!

This video is of one of the talks that was given by one of my favourite brands, Make-up Forever. It was hosted by Jacques Waneph one of the founders of make-up forever. He told us all about the company while the demo was going on. He talked about brand’s humble beginnings when they had to live on sandwiches and sell their car to get enough money to make eyeshadows and how they initially got Kryolan to manufacture their foundations.

He also discussed how the brand has grown over the years, the new product innovations and a very exciting brush range that will soon launch…watch this space! What I found fascinating were all the anecdotes of how they developed products, learning from Make-up Artists along the way.

There was also some beautiful bodypainting taking place all through the weekend at the Make-up Forever counter.
