Beauty Lowdown: Skin Primers

Primers Collage

There seems to be alot of confusion about make-up primers out there, so I thought I would give the low down on my favourite primers that are in my professional kit and what way I use them.

Primers for OILY Skin:

Primer for Oily Skin Shu Uemura's UV MousseI love Shu Uemura’s UV Mousse, it is perfect on my slightly oily skin and ensures that my make-up does not budge all day. Mr. Shu Uemura always had aspirations to create a product convenient to use in a texture that is new to cosmetics. He described his primer as “a light make-up as transparent as they air”. Well he certainly is that! Unlike any other primers I have tried on the market, this primer is the perfect consistency for oily skin types. The mousse is lightweight and glides easily on the skin. The mattifying properties quickly get to work as the light veil dries on your skin, sucking up any excess oil for long-lasting flawless beauty. It also contains factor 30, which means your skin will be protected from the aging properties of the sun. You can purchase this at Brown Thomas.

Korres Primer

I also love the Korres Pomegranate Mattifying Primer, again it is great for oily skin, but this one isn’t as drying to the skin so is great for people with combination skin too. If your symptoms are visible pores, unwanted shine, and an overall makeup meltdown, then Korres has the remedy for you. This clinically proven, universally nude Pomegranate Mattifying Primer blends to an invisible matte finish while minimizing the appearance of pores, balancing skintone and texture, and preparing skin for smooth makeup application and long-lasting wear. The 94% natural, non-comedogenic formula is water-based so it allows the skin to breathe and never clogs pores. The formula is loaded with antioxidant-rich pomegranate extract to help tighten pores, willow bark extract to balance skin, witch hazel water to mattify and tighten while removing excess oil and dirt, and rice starch to absorb excess surface oil and soften skin. You can purchase Korres products at Beauty Boutique, however at the time of writing this, they didn’t have this particular primer in stock.

Primers for NORMAL TO COMBINATION Skin:

Benefit Pore ProfessionalPeople with this kind of skin type have a much wider range of products to choose from. I love Benefit’s Pore Professional. It is phenomenal at covering large pores, especially around the nose area. It has smoothing, slightly mattifying ingredients that create the perfect base on which to apply your foundation. I find this is great applied lightly on the skin with a foundation brush, this will help to prolong the life of your makeup. My favourite aspect of this primer is that it can be applied over your foundation too. If there are any areas that you still don’t look 100% smooth, you can use this as you would polyfiller! It is lightly tinted, so you can apply it invisibly over your foundation and it will help to diffuse any uneveness.

Primers for DRY Skin:

MAC Fix Plus SprayYou have to be super careful with dry skin when applying make-up. If you aren’t you can end up with a cakey, flakey mess. The most important thing is to ensure that the skin is well prepped with the correct skin care. Once the skin is moisturised there are a few primers that work well for dryer skin types. MAC Fix+ Spray is one. It is an aqua-spritz of vitamin and minerals, infused with a calm-the-skin blend of green tea, chamomile, cucumber, topped off with the fresh, natural, energizing scent of Sugi. It can be used under makeup as a light primer, that hydrates and plumps, the skin literally drinks it up! It can also be used over your make-up to ensure it lasts all day.

studio secrets primerAnother fantastic primer for dry skin is the Studio Secrets Smoothing Resurfacing Primer. This primer masks wrinkles and uneven textures in the skin, making the complexion incredibly smooth with a velvety touch. Skin feels soft as if resurfaced.

Primers for SWEATY Skin:

Sweat StopOr should I say, for skin that tends to “perspire” seems a bit more lady like. There are a number of my clients that have difficulty with getting a bit hot under the collar. Especially for special occasions like weddings and when you have to give an important speach. This is a product that I discovered in my Film and Television work, we would apply this before applying prosthetics so that the actors skin didn’t loosen the glue with sweat. My personal favourite is this formula called Sweat Stop by Michael Davy.  It doesn’t dry the skin out too much or cause any nasty reactions. Remember, like any other anti-perspirant, this is most effective when used over a couple days.

I hope you have found this post helpful and if you have any questions about any particular primers out there, do get in touch as I have pretty much tried every product out there and experienced every kind of skin difficulty in the course of my work.

Hope to hear from you soon. Lots of love,

PantoneIQ1

So you probably remember a couple of weeks ago, that I was telling you about a nifty little tool that Sephora/Pantone had release, you can see that post here. While I was on holidays I decided to pop into a Sephora store to discover if this little device, that promised so much lived up my expectations.

Sephora Pantone Setup

I was promptly seated in a special station that was set up, just for the the Colour Matching Service. The Beauty Associate, showed me all the tools and promptly explained what everything did. I unfortunately don’t have any pictures of the scanner, because we lost our camera, but luckily I had also taken a couple with my phone. There was this uber cool scanner and also this chart, which had all the various skin tones and shades listed on it. Just like we know, it ranges from Pink, Neutral to Yellow.

Sephora Color IQ: Pantone Skin Tone Grid

So she did three scans on my face. One on my forehead, one around the nose and then one on the jawline. The machine computes these three colours and then gives you one tone that will balance out the darker and lighter tones making you look even skinned and flawless! Well that is the hope.

After this they emailed me my matches, which you can see below:

After all that, I bought a foundation not on the list! I just like to be difficult 🙂 I went for a foundation that hasn’t been listed with this tool yet, I will do a review on that later.

I think that it is a fantastic tool for the consumer to get a foundation that matches their skin tone. I for one have bought enough of the wrong shades throughout the years and I am a trained make-up artist! What about you?

What do you think of this tool, would you like to see it in Ireland? I have read online that Boots now has something similar, has anyone tried that? I am interested to learn more about it. As you can see from the extensive list above, the Sephora tool recommends lots of different brands, textures and forms of foundations. This makes it a far superior tool compared to the No.7 one. It would be great to see a department store like Brown Thomas or Debenhams developing a tool like this.

Let me know what you think.

Lots of Love,
